Still ridiculous. Still brilliant. Still one of the funniest movies ever made.
Forget everything you think you know about King Arthur. In Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Arthur and his thoroughly unqualified Knights of the Round Table set off across medieval England in search of the Holy Grail—and encounter killer rabbits, rude Frenchmen, an increasingly exasperated God, an absurdly dangerous bridge, coconut horses, and just about everything else you could possibly imagine.
The genius of Holy Grail is that the Pythons never treat the ridiculousness as a joke they need to explain. They simply keep raising the stakes. The film gleefully demolishes the conventions of epic adventure movies while delivering an astonishing number of endlessly quotable moments.
But beneath all the silliness is something genuinely clever: a fearless parody of Arthurian legend, Hollywood epics and the very idea of cinematic grandeur.
Nearly fifty years later, Monty Python and the Holy Grail remains gloriously, unapologetically stupid—and wickedly smart at the same time.
